How to be a proper fangirl~ Hetalia edition

Recently I’ve gotten a number of my friends interested in Hetalia. Of course they really don’t know much about it, and I’m sort of worried though that they’ll turn out to be a bit of an obnoxious fangirl. This is a little guide towards newcomers from what I believe is a majority of the fandoms’ point of view of how to refrain from being what would otherwise cause them to be insulted. Whip out your popcorn we’re going on an adventure.

1. shipping
In reality, ship whoever and whatever you want. Nobody will judge you (fandom: unless it’s UsUk)-don’t ask me why, but one of the biggest problems with this fandom when it comes to shipping wars is is many people (not everyone, just some) hate UsUk for whatever reason. As opposed to the pairing FrUk. It is quite the argument sometimes. I’m not saying you should or shouldn’t ship anything, it’s just something you should be aware of. This fandom can at times be viscious.
  You should:
a)Not shove your pairings down others throats.
b)Not judge others for what they ship/argue.
c)Overall, be calm about others pairings. Or shall I say, don’t expect everyone to ship what you ship.
*Do not mind those who say your ship is stupid because it is not “Historically accurate” Who cares. A ship is a ship. It’s your own business, if anyone else is offended, that’s their problem, not yours.
*Disregard the O in OTP if you desire. Multishipping is cool and all. As far as I’ve seen within the fandom, nobody gets offended when you’re a multishipper. I don’t know.
On a side note: Self shipping/ inserthetaliacharacterhere x Reader is frowned upon. Not forbidden or anything of the sort. OCs have a shake acceptance as it is, but shipping with yourself if needed, should ultimately be a private matter.
PAIRING NAMES- see this link from the hetalia wikia for reference.
——-NO SHIP IS CANON!!!——-

2. behavior
When you first join the fandom, there’s no doubt you’ll be giggly, wanting to quote each silly thing. I understand that you’ll need to get that fangirling out some way. I went down that road, and I’m sure everyone who first became a fan went down that road slightly, whether or not they admit it. The key is to make that time period fast, or nonexistant if possible. You may find the new change offensive at first, I know I was offended when I first saw a represtentation of a “fangirl”, which I didn’t realize at the time, I was a total fangirl. (see “shit hetalia fans say” further down)
A majority of this behavior can be found throughout youtube, google, fanpop, deviantart, etc. This may be oppinionated but-I believe Hetalia is very, if not the most “controlled” when it comes to the fans on tumblr specifically. (From what I have witnessed myself, this is just my opinion after all)
**Don’t get me wrong, bursting out in tears/noises/laughter/etc is fine. I’ve been a fan for nearly a year and I still find myself learning more about the fandom and squealing and all of those thigns simply over some precious fanart or a well written fanfiction. It’s okay. We all have lots of feels. If in public, I would suggest you try to refrain from these thigns, for the sake of well, everyone. If you’re alone or with another hetalian, by all means LET IT ALL OUT I’M HERE FOR U XOXO

overly used quotes/references you should really probably refrain from excessively saying:

  • “PASTAAAA!”
  • “VODKAAA”
  • “You want to become one with me, da? ^J^
  • ARU ARU ARU ARU (etc)
  • Any, and I repeat ANY remark of France being a rapist. NO. FRANCE IS THE COUNTRY OF LOVE. HE SAYS HIMSELF, “LOVE SHOULD NOT BE FORCED ON ANYONE” iS THAT ENOUGH? GAH
  • Talk of prussia being “awesome” which really has too many variations too discus, but, well, just be careful.
  • Spain is not a pedo. Ok.
  • Veee~
  • DOITSU DOITSU
  • kolkolkolkol

etc x 1000000
now many of these are tolerated, and not all of them can be as “annoying” as others, it’s really in the case you use them and/or reference them. Just be careful.
Dear fangirl, newcomer, etc. Even though you may not see it or realize what you’re doing, you may be an embarassment. Maybe not to everyone, but so many people are ashamed because of the way these sorts of people behave. I’ve seen too many few people be blamed for the fandom’s entire behavior. When all that is really needed is a realization of what they’re doing. I don’t know how to put this nicely, but it is how it is. So I hope this all clears up somewhat all of the confusion about what “hetalia fangirls” are, and how to not be one. The best thing is to be aware of it. That’s what did it for me. You’ll probably be offended when you first read all of this, I know I was, then I acknowledged it, and moved on. see THIS VIDEO and please be cautious of your behavior and whatnot.
Also, let me clarify, any of these examples are not all things you should never do, just be cautious of what you say PLEASE. REVALUATE YOUR LIFE A LITTLE I DONT KNOW JUST THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK/TYPE/WHATEVA.

3. other things. PLZ DONT. JUST NO.
I understand you’re probably (and I understand most hetalians probably do this) fangirling over flags, well…Be respectful please. If you cosplay, know of the “flag rules” It is disgraceful to wear flgs as capes or to have them touch the ground. I’m not to sure on how flag rules for non-America flags are. I would suggest treating them the same linkylink to flag code
Also, when you’re in history class, yes, history will be more enjoyable with the references reminding you of hetalia, but..no, you should not giggle al lso much and think it’s so silly because it reminds you of your otp or whatever else. It is dark and it is overall something to be taken serious. Sure, hetalia itself is an acception, but be respectful and guarded please. It could be a bad representation for all of us. For example if you’re giggling over ww2 discussions and the plague or whatever else I mean rEALLY. be mature for the sake of us all. Death or anything along the lines is not something to be joked about. Behave yourselves.
Don’t just watch the anime too, make sure you read the web comic :3 It’ll make the entire experience a thousand times more enjoyable.

Although I seem to only be criticizing fangirls here, regular fans can be bad too. Being too judgmental over newcomers, or just judgmental in gerneral, insulting varieties of fanart of stories. I mean, not everyone’s perfect. No hetalia fan is 100% flawless. No way. We all have our moments. We were all newcomers/fangirls at a time. I don’t really know what happened, whether fans have gotten more secluded over time or what.
Most fans are so nice, but there’s an insane amount of people to keep track of anymore, and so many fanterms and au’s. Really if anyone needs help with anything or has any sorts of questions. My inbox is always open. I hope I didn’t offend anyone too bad and that most of the things I say are agree-able. This is all just my point of view from the entire fandoms perspective. I don’t personally think a lot of these things but as a majority this is what I understand. Thank you, sorry, ETC ETC ETC. THIS IS WAY TOO LONG AKSJDKLASJDKL Any feedback (PLZ DON’T HURT ME THOUGH) is appreciated.
In the end I can’t tell a single one of you how to behave, but I do hope you’ll be more cautious. *insert i tried gold star here*

Fan Art is fan art. It’s all good. Not everyone is extremely talented in the art field. We should still encourage others to keep drawing and whatnot. Don’t discourage others by telling them “It sucks” Besides, everyone has got to start off somewhere.

Ship whoever you want. It doesn’t matter if it’s “historically accurate” or if it doesn’t make sense. There’s something called an opinion. It’s okay to have them. If anyone else is offended, that’s their problem. Not yours.
